Some major Gardening Considerations

Posted on December 30, 2007. Filed under: Gardening | Tags: , , |

WhyWait? If you don’t have a garden and are thinking about starting one – there are a couple of major issues to consider:

What kind of a garden do you want and where’s the best place to put it?

If you’re just looking for something to look nice in your yard, you’ll want a flower garden or you might be more interested in a vegetable garden. These usually require a little more work and research than a flower garden, but can be much more rewarding.

Do you have a suitable spot and space for your garden/s?

Your number 1 consideration is the sun. The idea is to get the most sunlight as evenly distributed as possible for the longest period of time.

Avoid putting your gardens in a north corner of your property. Some things will grow, but it doesn’t really work well for a general garden.

If possible, choose a location with southern exposure. Here the sun lies warm all day long. Plant your rows of vegetables and flowers to run north and south. The plants will receive the sun’s rays all morning on the eastern side, and all afternoon on the western side. You shouldn’t have any lopsided plants with such an arrangement.

Maybe your garden has to face southeast. In order to get the best distribution of sunlight run the rows northwest and southeast.

Your ideas should be planned out on paper. The plan is a great help when the real planting time comes. It saves time and unnecessary buying of seed and will assure a more rewarding gardening experience.

Hi Richard
my thinking may be slighly different but.. I beleve there are always plants who will love its new found home be it south facing or not – a theory that so many gardeners have lived by for years is that of south facing only – often neglecting the lesser chosen species. North facing is not an elimination of light but more a reduction in light and only one of five factors required for the growth of any plant. To ruffle the theory even moreso if the soil on the more southern facing aspect is of an inferior ingredient then the basic principles must surely be re-evaluated to the specific garden?

I fully agree that ‘fail to prepare – prepare to fail’ with regard to garden planning.
